The name of both the town and the bay derives from the old word "Aiguillon" or 'sharp tip'. The bay of L'Aiguillon, forming a near-perfect 20-km arc, has remained a largely unspoilt mussel-growing area with its thousands of wooden poles planted at the mouth of the estuary.

The commune of l'Aiguillon stretches over a 1043-hectare area, 12 km long but only 700 m wide on average, between the river Lay and one of its former branches.
